Early attempt on starting a business
My journey really started back in 1996. I was out of college then and got so much time on my hand. I ask my dad for some capital to start my own buy and sell business. I used the money to buy coconut from the farmers and eventually selling them to an exporter for a profit. Basically, I was a middleman. At that time, I was proud because I was earning. Eventually, I have to close the business down when I went back to university.
Being self-employed
While still in the university, me and my buddies started doing some freelance work as software developer. We were lucky to continuously get some clients (We did this through referrals). Money was better but it was not that steady. So when I received a job offer from a well-known Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) firm, I never hesitated to leave and accept the job.
Was I successful?
I believe I failed because none of these exist now. Although I was earning when I still had these ventures, it stopped once my involvement ceased. I think the biggest issue was that my earnings was so much dependent on my active participation. It did not allow me to pursue other investment opportunities because I need to look after these businesses all the time.
Still, I learned from the experience. First, it gave me some insights on how to run a business. More importantly, now I know some of the attributes I should be looking for in pursuing business ventures.
